Research Question: Should teachers be trained to carry concealed weapons?
Beitstein, Noland. “Arming Teachers Not Solution to Gun Violence in Schools.” badgerherald.com. The Badger Herald, 28 April. 2014. Web. 10 July. 2014.
Training teachers and staff to carry firearms will not keep school shootings from occurring. In fact, it may even help students obtain firearms if they decide to plan a shooting. There are many factors and reasons behind why arming teachers is a bad idea; accidental shootings, staff member freezing up when he/she is confronted with an assailant, and students getting their hands on the firearms, just to name a few. Still, some school districts disagree. They feel the way to stop gun is with a gun.
The journalist of this article has a very biased opinion on the topic. He feels that it is a very bad idea to arm teachers and send them into schools. The source is reliable. He has done his research and states facts about recent shootings.
I think this would be a good source for my research paper because it gives a different opinion than most of my other sources, In this article the journalist does not support arming our teachers, and gives good reasons why he feels this way. Even though personally, I feel we should arm our teachers, I think he made some really good points, and I agree with some of what he said. This article relates to my other sources by speaking about teachers carrying firearms, but none of my other sources gives such a biased, personal opinion on the topic.
Bradley, Donald. "Amid an Epidemic of School Shootings, Some Teachers are Being Trained to Shoot Back." The Kansas City Star 23 June 2014: n. pag. Print.
Teachers become the students on a firearms training field in Missouri. Four Missouri school districts have decided it is time to fight back, and they have decided that training teachers to carry firearms is the answer. So far the schools have not had any parents oppose the decision. Still other schools are adopting the ALICE- alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate. This idea includes school personnel and students to do anything they can to fight off an armed intruder- barricading doors, escaping from windows, or throwing objects. They have even taken the trainings to the schools; acting out scenarios in the classroom.
This article has a lot of reliable information. The journalist has interviewed officers involved in the training, school district personnel, and teachers. It gives a lot of statistics involving past school shootings. While most of the people in this article seem to be on board with the decision to train teachers to shoot, there are still a few that believe there are other alternatives.
This is a very useful source for my research paper. Some of the information provided is information that I have found in some of my other sources such as the article by Jessica Chasmar,"Missouri Trains Teachers to Carry Concealed Firearms in Class." Some of the information is brand new. This article gives information on shootings dating back to 1850, School shootings obviously are not a new problem, but they seem to be escalating.
Castillo, Mariano. “NRA Clear on Gun Debate Stance: Arm Schools.” CNN U.S..CNNNewsource. 21 Dec. 2012. Web. 10 July 2014.
The National Rifle Association has announced that it will fund a team to design a program to get armed security personnel in schools across the U.S. The NRA believes armed security at schools across the country will help cut back on the occurrence of the school shootings. However, not everyone feels this is the answer. More than 195,000 people have signed a petition supporting new gun control legislation, and 52% of Americans favor major gun restrictions.
This article gives the opinion of gun control from the NRAs standpoint. It also gives a little insight into the view of the people lobbying for stricter gun controls.
This article will be helpful to my research paper by showing the opinion of the NRA, and the motivation behind why they want to arm our schools. Setting up armed security at schools is an alternative to arming teachers and personnel. This source goes along with the source about Obama focusing on gun control.
Chasmar, Jessica. "Missouri Trains Teachers to Carry Concealed Firearms in Class." Washington Times. The Washington Times, 23 June 2014. Web. 9 2014.
In Missouri, school districts have begun sending their staff members to firearms training. For two staff members to get 40 hours of training, it costs the school district $17,500. So far, ten Missouri school districts have sent staffers for training and three more districts have signed contracts. Only district administrators and local law enforcement officers will be aware of who is carrying a firearm. The recent school shootings are the motivation behind the training.
This article is a reliable source that interviews several people involved in the training. There is no bias opinion from the journalist in this article. This article gives a lot of facts such as, the amount of time the training takes, the cost of training, and how many districts in Missouri are utilizing the training.
I can definitely use this article as a reference in my research paper. The information and facts given in this article hit upon topics that are essential for my paper. This article shows that teachers carrying concealed firearms in classrooms are a reality. This source ties in with my other sources by giving information on another state that is participating in training teachers to carry concealed, such as my sources on Florida and Colorado approving a bill for teachers to carry firearms.
Getting, John and McNiff, Catherine “Milestones in Federal Gun Control Legislation.” infoplease.com Pearson Education, Inc-n.d. Web. 10 July. 2014
In 2012, President Obama announced that he was going to change the face of gun control in America. Some of his suggestions were universal background checks on gun sales, reinstating the assault weapons ban, limiting ammunition magazines to a 10-round capacity, providing schools with counselors and recourse officers, putting more low enforcement officers on the street, enacting stronger punishments for gun trafficking, and offering better health coverage for the mentally impaired. Some of these initiatives should be in place through 23 executive actions. Obama also called on Congress to do its part in enacting stricter gun control legislation.
This is a very unbiased article about the actions Obama plans to make with the focus on gun control. The authors of this article did their research, and they show their facts to back it up.
This is a great source that I will be using for my research paper. It not only states Obama’s plans for action, it also breaks the Second Amendment and other Acts pertaining to fire arms into a timeline I found on the school shootings. This source relates directly to the Second Amendment.
Hu, Winnie. "Varied Paths Towad Healing for Sites of Terrorized Schools." The New York Times 22 Dec. 2012, sec. National: pA1(L). Print.
Each school that has fallen victim to a school shooting deals with the tragedy a little differently. Some schools completely dismantle and reconstruct the building in which the shooting occurred; some build memorial of the victims; while others go so far as to demolishing the entire school. Families, school officials, and even psychologists believe removing any reminder of the incident helps students deal with the tragedy and begin the healing process.
This is a good news article with a great deal of information on how different schools are dealing with such horrific tragedies. The journalist does not share her opinion on the topic. She has done her research and interviewed many people involved in the tragedies.
I believe this article will be a useful resource for my research paper. It is a totally different perspective from most of my other sources. This article gives the motivation behind why teachers and school districts are deciding to carry concealed firearms. This article relates with my source "Teachers need guns, says lawmaker whose son attended school with Colorado shooter.” by Maxim Lott, by relating how different people and schools deal with such a tragedy.
Lott, Maxim. "Teachers Need Guns, Says Lawmaker Whose Son Attended School With Colorado Shooter." Fox News. FOX News Network, 6 Jan. 2014. Web. 9 July 2014.
Colorado State Senator Ted Harvey has introduced a bill that will allow teachers to carry guns. Fueling Harvey’s fire is the fact that his son attends school where James Pierson shot Claire Davis and set off a bomb in the library. Harvey’s wife is a school teacher at the school as well. He feels that if the staff had been armed on the day of the shooting that things might not have gotten as far as they did. Colorado was also the site of the Columbine High School shooting, where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, gunned down 13 people.
This news article is a reliable source of information. Fox News interviewed the Colorado State Senator himself and got his opinion on the matter first hand. The journalist is not biased in his opinion of the topic, but Senator Harvey most definitely supports the bill allowing teachers to carry firearms. The topic really got up close and personal to the Senator when the shootings came to the school his son attends and his wife teaches at.
This article will be a very helpful source for my research paper because it comes from one of the people who actually proposed the bill. None of my other sources came this close to the heart of the matter. This article is going to be a great different perspective for my research paper. This source closely relates with the article "Amid an Epidemic of School Shootings, Some Teachers are Being Trained to Shoot Back" by Donald Bradley, by relating how some House officials are deciding to deal with the problem of school shootings.

They use information from the latest FBI data available that includes the updated information on shootings from the last four years. This information includes where the shootings happened, what type of weapon was used, and other pertinent information.
This is a reliable source because it comes from a well known group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Mayors Against Illegal Guns got their information directly from the FBI database.

McGrory, Kathleen. "House Okays Letting Teachers Have Guns." Tampa Bay Times 29 Apr. 2014, sec. Newsbank: 1A. Print.
The Florida House has approved a bill that will allow teachers to carry firearms. The bill will let school districts choose staff members at their discretion, to carry concealed firearms on the school campus. The staff members must be trained in firearms safety, have a concealed weapon license, and have military or law enforcement experience. As part of the bill, schools will have to hold drills in case of an active shooter situation. The NRA and many representatives are supporters of the bill, while many representatives argue that this is not the solution. They feel that giving schools the funds to hire resource officers to be on campus is a more logical solution.
This article is useful because it is not focusing on just supporters or opposers of the bill; it is giving information from both sides. The journalist did a good job of being impartial in this article; she also did an impressive job of interviewing people that have a say in the matter and want to be heard.
This article is helpful in my research because it gives the opinion of the representatives that oppose the bill and it gives the opinion of the representatives that support the bill. It is important for me to hear both sides of the issue to write a good research paper. Unlike most of the sources I have found, this article includes information from both sides. This source directly relates with my sources on Missouri and Colorado passing bills to allow teachers to carry firearms.
Pavlich, Katie. “Gun Crime Soars in England Where Guns Are Banned.” Townhall.com. Townhall Magazine, 11 Dec. 2012. Web. 12 July 2014.
The UK’s solution to gun crime is to ban guns. In banning guns, the gun crime rate has soared. Robbery has increased significantly as well as domestic burglary, retail burglary, and drug offenses.

This is a great source of information to use for my research paper. This article gives information about gun control in other countries. this article closely relates to another source of mine written by Greg Tepper.
Ronningen, Audrey “In the Mind of a Killer: The Psychology Behind School Shootings.” TBL The Bottom Line, 14 Nov. 2012. Web. 14 July 2014
School shootings are seemingly unprovoked. It is hard to determine the motive behind the increase in school shootings and other related crimes. Many of the criminals behind the shootings have been documented to have been taking medication for mental disorders such as Aspergers Disorder.
I think this is a reliable source of information for my research paper. The author does seem to be on the side of the victims and victim’s families, but she portrays a very compelling argument backed up by research and facts.
This article will be a great asset to my research paper. It discussed many mental disorders and prescription medications that could be a factor behind so many school shootings. This article relates back to the article by Kathleen Weber.
Tepper, Greg. "Armed Teachers, Guards Bolster School Secuity in Israel.". FoxNews.com, 30 Dec. 2012. Web. 14 July 2014.
In Israel schools are protected by fences, metal detectors, armed guards, and armed teachers. Teachers carrying firearms is something that has been occurring for a long time in Israel. They believe that at the very least, a gun toting teacher will buy time for law enforcement officers to arrive. The teachers are put through a rigorous 40 to 60 hour training course, must follow a centralized command system, and must fit a certain criteria.
I think this source is reliable and gives a lot of facts as to why the United States should train their teachers to carry firearms. The journalist does seem to be on the side of supporters that believe the United States should allow teachers to carry firearms.
This is a great source for my research paper. This article goes right along with the articles on Missouri and Colorado. It also gives a lot of information about the training teachers in Israel receive that I can compare to the training American teachers go through.
Timeline of Worldwide School and Mass Shootings.” Infoplease. Pearson Education, Inc, 2012. Web. 10 July. 2014.
This piece of information is a timeline of school shootings dating back from February 2, 1996 to June 5, 2014. Some of the incidents included are shootings that occurred near schools. When we think of school shootings we seem to only think of elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, but colleges and universities are also many times the victims of shootings. The most recent shooting being in Seattle, Washington, where a man by the name of Aaron Ybarrra, opened fire at Seattle Pacific University. Ybarra killed one student and wounded two others.
This seems to be a useful source. All of the data was compiled from newspaper reports. The sponsor is Pearson Education, which I know from firsthand experience writes curriculums for many schools.
I am very excited about this source, and I will most definitely be using it for my research paper. It is a timeline that breaks down the date the shootings occurred, the place the shootings happened, and all of the details of the shootings. This is the first source that I have found that includes all of the school shootings and details in one place! This timeline relates with many of my sources, including the article "Varied Paths Toward Healing For Sites of Terrorized Schools." by Winnie Hu.
